WE INVITE YOU TO BE A PART OF IT! The most popular on-the-air operating event in amateur radio. Join your local Amateur Radio community and get in on the action! The STEUBENVILLE-WEIRTON AMATEUR RADIO CLUB invites the Public to join us at our annual ARRL Field Day event. Join us on Saturday, June 22, 2024 from 2:00 PM until 8:00 PM at Friendship Park, Shelters 4 and 5 (up on the hill and across from Friendship Lake). Come see local Amateur Radio Operators, "Hams," set up our antennas, radios, and other communications equipment and attempt to make as many contacts as possible from the field with other Hams throughout the United States and Canada. You can also experience making a contact using our GOTA, Get On The Air, station. For more information concerning Amateur Radio visit the web site of the American Radio Relay League: www.arrl.org __________________________________________________ Directions to Friendship Park: Friendship Park is located, along with the Jefferson County Fairgrounds, south of Bloomingdale and just north of Smithfield. The entrance is just off Jefferson County Highway 23. County Highway 23 is accessible in Bloomingdale by turning south (the only direction you can go) at the (now defunct) traffic light in the center of town. You will wind along the road, going through a railroad tunnel and bearing left afterward. You will eventually see the entrance to the Park/Fairgrounds on your left (the Park's lake is in view). Take the entrance road straight back into the Park, making NO turns. You will see the collection of various military vehicles ahead, on your left. Note the sign, on your left, that shows the entrance to Shelters 4 & 5 (which are on top of a small hill overlooking the lake and entrance road). Below is a link to Google Maps with the roads inside the Park showing the drive to the Field Day site, the entrance to which is directly across from the marker named "Apollo 14 Moon Tree" on the map. The entrance to Shelters 4 & 5 is to the left (you can see it by the hook shaped road leading upward on the map and ending in the shelters' area). Produced by ARRL, the national association for amateur radio https://www.arrl.orgARRL Field Day is the single most popular on-the-air event held annually in the US and Canada. On the fourth full weekend of June of each year, thousands of radio amateurs gather with their clubs, groups or simply with friends to operate from remote locations. Field Day is a picnic, a campout, practice for emergencies, an informal contest and, most of all, FUN! It is a time where many aspects of Amateur Radio come together to highlight our many roles. While some will treat it as a contest, other groups use the opportunity to practice their emergency response capabilities. It is an excellent opportunity to demonstrate Amateur Radio to the organizations that Amateur Radio might serve in an emergency, as well as the general public. For many clubs, ARRL Field Day is one of the highlights of their annual calendar. The contest part is simply to contact as many other stations as possible and to learn to operate our radio gear in abnormal situations and less than optimal conditions. We use these same skills when we help with events such as marathons and bike-a-thons; fund-raisers such as walk-a-thons; celebrations such as parades; and exhibits at fairs, malls and museums — these are all large, preplanned, non-emergency activities. But despite the development of very complex, modern communications systems — or maybe because they ARE so complex — ham radio has been called into action again and again to provide communications in crises when it really matters. Amateur Radio people (also called "hams") are well known for our communications support in real disaster and post-disaster situations. What is the ARRL? The American Radio Relay League is the national association for Amateur Radio in the USA, representing over 170,000 FCC-licensed Amateurs. The ARRL is the primary source of information about what is going on in ham radio. It provides books, news, support and information for individuals and clubs, special events, continuing education classes and other benefits for its members. What is Amateur Radio? Often called "ham radio," the Amateur Radio Service has been around for a century. In that time, it’s grown into a worldwide community of licensed operators using the airwaves with every conceivable means of communications technology. Its people range in age from youngsters to grandparents. Even rocket scientists and a rock star or two are in the ham ranks. Most, however, are just normal folks like you and me who enjoy learning and being able to transmit voice, data and pictures through the air to unusual places, both near and far, without depending on commercial systems. The Amateur Radio frequencies are the last remaining place in the usable radio spectrum where you as an individual can develop and experiment with wireless communications. Hams not only can make and modify their equipment, but can create whole new ways to do things. For More Information visit: www.arrl.org/field-day __________________________________________________ SWARC Dinner Meeting Please note that the location of the next SWARC Dinner Meeting, on Wednesday, May 15th, will be at Murray's Restaurant in the west end of Wintersville, Ohio, near the intersection of Springdale Avenue and CR-22A (Cadiz Road), east of the "Big Lots" discount store, and across from the Indian Creek High School campus. Dinner Meeting locations for 2024 will be determined on a month-by-month basis at the first Wednesday Business meeting. A permanent dinner meeting venue will be determined by the membership sometime in 2024 and posted at a later date. Dinner Meetings start at 6:00 PM on the third Wednesday of each month. __________________________________________________ SWARC Social Media Presentation (Presented by WD8SAB at the 3-6-2024 Business Meeting) SWARC Social Media Presentation.pdf __________________________________________________ SWARC Is Serving Local Boy Scouts (BSA) The Boy Scouts and the ARRL have worked together since establishing the Wireless Merit Badge in 1918 now called the Radio Merit Badge. Also in 2011 the Boy Scouts of America and the ARRL signed a memorandum of understanding how the two will work together.
Jamboree-on-the-Air, or JOTA, is the largest Scouting event in the world. It is held annually on the third full weekend in October. JOTA uses amateur radio to link Scouts and hams around the world, around the nation, and in your own community. This jamboree requires no travel, other than to a nearby amateur radio operator’s ham shack. However, this isn't a contest but rather to give Scouts a Ham Radio experience. In 2023, Troop 3 Steubenville visited one of members contest station (WA3C) and made 101 contacts including 12 countries. NOTE: Any Scouts or Troops that are interested in the Radio Merit Badge, Jamboree on the Air, or just to visit an amateur radio station can contact SWARC as we have a few members that are Radio Merit Badge Counselors. Also, any Scouts or Troops that are interested in the Radio Merit Badge class can contact SWARC for details on such a class. __________________________________________________ SWARC is Sponsoring a Simplex Net Every Saturday Evening of Every Week at 9:00 PM on 146.535 MHz! All business meetings start at 6:00 PM!
